  1. Introduction()
    • Ductile iron, also known as nodular cast iron or spheroidal graphite iron, is a type of cast iron that has excellent mechanical properties due to the spherical shape of the graphite in its microstructure.
  2. Composition()
    • The chemical composition of ductile iron typically includes carbon (C) in the range of 3.0% - 4.0%, silicon (Si) from 1.8% - 3.2%, and the total content of manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) not exceeding 3.0%. Additionally, appropriate amounts of rare - earth elements and magnesium (Mg) are added as nodulizers.
  3. Manufacturing Process()
    • The raw materials such as industrial pig iron and scrap steel are first melted at a high temperature to obtain the cast iron liquid. Then, nodulizing agents and inoculants are added to the liquid for nodulizing and inoculating treatment. This causes the graphite in the cast iron to crystallize into a spherical shape. Finally, the ductile iron parts are obtained through the casting process.
  4. Performance Characteristics()
    • High Strength(): The tensile strength and yield strength of ductile iron are much higher than those of ordinary cast iron. The minimum yield strength can reach 40 ksi and can even exceed that of carbon steel. The tensile strength can be more than 800 MPa, enabling it to withstand large loads.
    • Good Toughness(): The spherical - shaped graphite after nodulizing significantly reduces the brittleness of the material, improves its toughness and impact resistance, making it less likely to break under complex stress conditions, and the elongation can be as high as 24%.
    • Strong Wear Resistance(): Ductile iron has good wear - resistant properties and is suitable for manufacturing parts that need to withstand friction and wear for a long time, such as automobile parts and agricultural machinery.
    • Good Vibration Damping(): It is superior to cast steel in terms of vibration - damping ability and can effectively absorb and dissipate vibration energy, making it suitable for working environments with large vibrations.
